The Women in Computer Science (WiCS) group had their first meeting to launch the group on Friday November 13th. The event was very successful with about 40 undergrads, grads, staff and faculty in attendance.

The meeting presented and offered a discussion of the goals and initiatives of the group. Students discussed what activities they would like to see in future and, in general, feedback from the students in attendance was very positive. The meeting ended with two short presentations: Leila Chinaei, SCS's Laboratory and Course Coordinator, talked about her experience about the Grace Hopper Celebration that she attended this year; Alif Islam and Jack McCracken, two SCS undergraduate students, presented their highlights from the "Beyond the Code" conference that they attended earlier this year. Check out the WiCS website at http://www.scs.carleton.ca/wics, where you can find more information about upcoming events and a link to the presentations. WiCS is seeking more feedback and student volunteers to help with different activities.

WiCSs in the news! On November 11th, WiCS was mentioned on the Midweek program on CKCU, 93.1. A short interview, with Leila Chineai, talking about why WiCS was started is contained in the program. Check out https://soundcloud.com/carol-b-11/women-in-computer-science-group for the program.
